Nursery Update

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your 4th of July celebrations. We actually had a pretty decent day yesterday. The sun came out in the afternoon and I was able to spend some time reading in the garden, just enjoying the sun on my legs. We had a great dinner with great company, and enjoyed a gorgeous sunset on Aberdeen beach.

Not too shabby for a typical day in Scotland.

I was going to do the usual highs and lows today, but I figured instead I’d give you an update on our nursery progress. Our furniture has arrived!

Well, it’s arrived in Covington. We still need to make arrangements to have it shipped to Aberdeen. According to company policy, the earliest we can ship our ‘baby shipment’ is 3 months from our due date, which is still 3 weeks away. Hopefully, we can get all of our ducks in a row by then because I can’t wait to see our nursery come together on this end!

Another thing we’ve been on the lookout for is a large hot air balloon print. Our friends Jillian and Ryan were in Edinburgh last weekend when they spotted this piece of perfection.
We were able to call the store with our payment information and Ryan and Jill hauled it back to Aberdeen for us. Thanks guys!

The only two big items left are purchasing a wardrobe and making a fabric scrap banner for behind the crib. Our nursery doesn’t have a closet, and many Europeans supplement this dilemma with wardrobes which serve as storage space. We don’t want to spend too much money on this because we likely will have an abundance of space in our next location and will have little need for wardrobes. However, I don’t want to get something too flimsy looking because it will ruin the aesthetic of our nursery. I found this little number yesterday for 50% off (currently 175 pounds or $260)and I’m thinking about going for it:

It’s a light grey so I think it will correspond with our dark grey furniture without clashing. What do you think? Otherwise, we’ll probably get this obscenely affordable plain ole white thing from Ikea (60 pounds, 90 dollars, God Bless Ikea!).

As for my crafting project, I’ve been brainstorming a lot about what to put behind the crib. My original inspiration for our balloon/sky themed nursery came from this room.

I think I’m going to make a similar scrap banner in seaglass, seafoam, baby blue, and French grey. Once we have a name, I want to add burlap bunting to the banner with his name stenciled on.

I wanted it to be in all linen since his bedding will be ‘cloud’ blue linen, but that stuff is expensive!

So I think I might do one color in linen and the others in high quality cotton or something. That plus the burlap will give it good texture, I think.

I’m kind of a crafting novice, so hopefully my little experiment will work out. If not, I can always buy one custom made from here:

Alright, well the sun is shining and I have an agenda to explore the royal estate at Balmoral before the Queen and her entourage show up later this month.  I’ll see you next week!

  1. Curious...when does the queen arrive? We were looking to book a hotel for the first couple of nights after we arrive in Aberdeen before we move into our new place, but everything seems to be booked up.

    1. They arrive at the end of July and stay through early September, but it's hard to believe that's what's contributing to no vacancies in Aberdeen. It's a common time for expats to move in, so that might be part of it, but it could be some sort of oil conference or something.

  2. Love the balloon print!! It's a beauty.

For your crafting Idea: You could always color the one color fabrick you have. It's quite cheap, for darker color you could even wash it with a new dark jeans. For a lighter color you can use bleach. (the more bleach in the water the lighter the color will be)
    Good luck
